Om Nom Nom Nomz Kitchen

8:00 PM

Om nom nom.

While no one can really confirm where the term originally comes from—Cookie Monster? Random people expressing the deliciousness of their food?—it is now known as the universally accepted expression of enjoying a good meal. So, when a restaurant is named similarly to that term, you know it has to give you a good dining experience. Meet Nomz Kitchen and Pastry, a less-than-one-year-old establishment at Grand Indonesia, Jakarta.

THE NITTY GRITTY DETAILS
Nomz Kitchen is the brainchild of Chef Arnold Poernomo, the MasterChef Indonesia judge, and Pastry Chef Kim Pangestu. Drawing inspiration from modern Australian cafés, Nomz Kitchen offers a flavourful mix of Asian and Western dishes, served in a simple yet gorgeous presentation. The decor is eclectic and cosy, as if inviting diners to stay a little bit longer and chat.

FOOD. BEVERAGE. DESSERT.

Sunny Side Up (IDR 80k)
While the mains seem really interesting, we’re particularly drawn to the staff’s recommendation on the brunch list, Sunny Side Up. One look at it, and we know we’re in love. On the plate is a beautiful array of crispy pork, battered silky tofu, crispy shallot, watercress salad, and sunny-side up egg, spiced with light Thai dressing. Give that sunny-side up egg a gentle poke, and you’ll get a gooey egg yolk that nicely ties all elements together. On a side note, if we could be hypercritical, we’d say that the crackling part could be a lot crispier.

Nomz Benedict (IDR 95k)
After such a high from Sunny Side Up, Nomz Benedict brings us back into the world of classic breakfast. Nomz Benedict is, obviously, an Eggs Benedict with a twist. Instead of the usual ham or bacon, it is topped with house cured salmon and salmon roe. The eggs are poached perfectly, the miso hollandaise is great, and the watercress salad is fresh; overall, Nomz Benedict is a solid dish.

Pink Panther (IDR 45k)
Claimed by the staff to be the most acidic out of all Nomz’s blended healthy drink menus, Pink Panther offers a mix of lychee, strawberry, yoghurt, and fresh milk. It falls a little bit short in terms of acidity, but it still is a very enjoyable beverage: fragrant, refreshing, and sweet.

So Berries (IDR 45k)
Surprisingly, So Berries—a blend of raspberry, blueberry, strawberry, yoghurt, and chia seeds—is more zingy than Pink Panther. But perhaps we should’ve known that it would be more acidic, considering the ingredients.

Detox Smoothies (IDR 45k)
Detox Smoothies is a mix of pineapple, ginger, coconut, water, honey, and lime. All we can say is if you loved ginger, you’d love it. If you hated ginger, you’d hate it.

Amazeballs (IDR 60k)
Dessert is an even trickier choice. With an eye-popping cake display and intriguing dessert list, picking one seems like the most difficult task in the world. Our pick falls on Amazeballs—which is totally, well, amazeballs. Aside from its futuristic appearance, it offers an amazing union between different forms of chocolate and passion fruit. Our favourite part is when the little balls of passion fruit “caviar” pops in your mouth, giving a dash of acidity to your entire mouth and balancing the sweet chocolate taste. So. Good.

Urban Geisha (IDR 48k/individual portion)
The quirky name of this cake perhaps reflects the white colour that predominantly covers the cake, similar to the white make-up that adorns a geisha’s face. Urban Geisha consists of layers of strawberry, green tea castela, speculoos crunchy, and vanilla mousse. The taste is quite subtle: the slight bitterness of the green tea is balanced nicely by the sweetness of the mousse. There’s also a lovely textural play from the crunchy element.

After that lunch, I would definitely add another word to the term om nom nom: om nom nom Nomz. Happy eating!
